In most volunteer organizations there are some who desire to do more and are willing to invest more time and resources than the others. They search out the extra knowledge and training that goes above and beyond the normal training.

In late 2003 it had come to the attention of several members of WMSAR that there was a need to build a night search team that was capable of operating independent of the regular group for extended periods of time.  A small number of people were asked to help establish what is now referred to as the Ranger team.

WMSAR has formed a small unit of these volunteers to fullfill some special needs. The Rangers are assigned extra duties such as Night Searches, Rope Work, Scouting for Base of Operations, Helicopter LZ Support, and Training Others. The Rangers also do extra training including overnight operations.
